Internships PDF Print E-mail

The Communication Internship provides academic credit for on-the-job experience under the guidance of an operational supervisor who is a professional in the field.  Student interns are expected to perform the duties and meet the expectations of the professional role.

To enroll in COMM 293 (Freshmen/Sophomore) or COMM 493 (Junior/Senior), a student must have attained a cumulative grade-point average of 2.00 or higher. Additionally, most internship opportunities have specific professional preparation qualifications associated with them.

Credits:  No more than twelve internship credits may be used to meet university graduation requirements and no more than six of those credits may be used by communication majors to satisfy their specific degree requirements. Graduate level internships (COMM 590 Practicum/Internship) also are available.

See Dr. Moore for a Practicum permission number. Questions, comments, suggestions or concerns will be met with an open mind and are always welcome.

SPRING 2010 - Guidelines for the Successful Student Intern
Internship Application is ONLINE at:  http://career.boisestate.edu

1.

Identify the internship for which you intend to apply. For your convenience there is a table of contents of Communication Department Internships on the website at http://boisestatecomm.info. You may intern with the company you are presently employed with or you can seek an internship through the Career Center’s Bronco Jobs at http://career.boisestate.edu (Top upper right of the page select Internship Application for Academic Credit). Ideally the internship will mimic your chosen field of study.

2.

Meet with your internship supervisor (The person who supervises you at work for the internship) to determine the scope of your duties, which you will use to fill in the Description of Internship Duties on the application, and the number of credits you expect to receive for your internship.
1 credit = 50 hours of work

3.

Seek approval from Dr. Rick Moore (The Internship Coordinator) by e-mail, drop-in, or phone before you start your Communication Internship. After you fill out the online application and submit it, an electronic message is sent to Dr. Moore. He is able to read your application and mark it approved or not approved. You will receive notice of his approval and will then be able to complete the application process.

4.

Print the online application by selecting the printer icon in the right column (the printed application will have signature lines at the bottom). After you have printed your application make sure you have selected the SUBMIT button.  This process does NOT register you for academic credit.

5.

Have your internship supervisor sign (The person who supervises you at your internship workplace) and date the application (Bottom line on the application).

6.

You must sign and date your application.

7.

Take the application to Dr. Moore for his final approval and signature, whereupon a copy will be made for the Comm Department.

8.

You take the application to Room 110 of the Administration Building where your data will be re-entered, after which you will registered for your credit(s). You will be able to check your application information on BroncoWeb. The deadline for registering for a Spring 2010 Internship is Monday, March 1, 2010. It is the same as the last day to drop classes or completely withdraw, add a challenge course, or practicum. See the home page of BroncoWeb for important dates to remember; Academic Calendar at http://broncoweb.boisestate.edu

9.

Check your BroncoWeb E-Mail account regularly. Dr. Moore will use it to contact you concerning how your internship is progressing. At this point you will provide Dr. Moore with a brief oral summary of your experience to date. If you are having difficulties you think he can help you overcome, now—if not before—is the time to let him know.

10.

Maintain a journal of your internship activities. You should have regular log entries, at least one to two per week. In these entries, discuss the duties you have been assigned, your reaction to the experience, learning "moments" and frustrations that you may be experiencing. The goal of the journal is for you to be reflective of the internship experience and to provide some self-assessment of the internship itself. Use this information to write your Summary Report (See #13). You do not turn the journal in to Dr. Moore, it is for your use only, unless your Internship Supervisor requests that it be turned in to him/her.

11.

Dr. Moore will send a letter and Evaluation form to your internship supervisor a few weeks before the end of the semester. Your supervisor will complete the form, indicating a passing or failing grade, and will return it to Dr. Moore by the due date of Friday, May 7, 2010.  Dr. Moore will accept the completed evaluation form by mail, email, fax or hand-delivered in a sealed envelope.

12.

You will write a 3 to 5 page, double-spaced report and submit it to Dr. Moore. This report should include the following: (THIS CHANGE IS IN EFFECT FOR THE SPRING 2010 INTERNSHIPS)

  • A synthesis of the work accomplished for the internship. Please share what you did, the differences that you made, the accomplishments you had, etc.
  • A description of problems encountered, if any, and how they were resolved, if they were. These reports will remain confidential.
  • An evaluation of the experience. Would you recommend this particular internship to others? Did you find the experience educationally viable? Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the internship experience.

13.

The DEADLINE for the Evaluation and your Report to be received by Dr. Moore is the last day of regular classes, prior to final exam week. Friday, May 7, 2010 by 5:00 pm.  If your supervisor needs another copy of the Evaluation Form please contact Chris Peterson in C100, call 426-3320, or email her at cpeters@boisestate.edu.

14.

Dr. Moore prefers an electronic copy (e-mail attachment) of your report for which the deadline is on or before Friday, May 7, 2010 by 5:00 pm.

15.

Failure to complete any part of these requirements can result in a failing grade for the internship.

16.

If there are any changes to your internship, please inform Dr. Moore or his assistant a.s.a.p.

  • Internship credits are only for the hours you work while the semester is in session.
  • To get credit for working at a job you already have you must be learning something new during the semester in which you are enrolled for the internship. You might do this by asking your supervisor for new responsibilities or projects.
  • A 3-credit internship requires 150 hours of work during the semester. This is roughly 10 hours per week if you spread it out evenly.
