Teaching Specialties:  Media criticism, media law and ethics, audio and video production.

Research Interests/Activities:  Mass media and ideology, especially issues related to the environment and religion.

Biography:

Rick C. Moore earned his doctorate from the University of Oregon and has taught at Boise State since 1994. He is currently serving as the department chair.

He loves teaching a wide variety of courses in communication theory, research, and criticism. Though occasionally dabbling in other "contexts" of communication, he mainly teaches courses related to mass communication.

Dr. Moore’s research interests are in the area of mass communication and ideology. Much of his writing has investigated media portrayal of religious and environmental issues. Another key area of study is the social thought of Jacques Ellul, a French theorist/theologian who asked challenging questions about the role of technology in our lives. Writing under his full name of Rick Clifton Moore, Dr. Moore has published articles in: The Journal of CommunicationMass Media & SocietyThe Journal of Media and ReligionThe Bulletin of Science, Technology, and SocietyAdvertising and Society Review; The Ellul Forum; and The Journal for Peace and Justice Studies.

When not in his office, in the classroom, or the library, Rick enjoys spending time with his wife Kim and his children Emily and Danny. He also has a fondness for old houses (the Moore's version being a perpetual work-in-progress) and occasionally gets to spend time wading in Idaho's beautiful mountain streams.

Biography:

David earned his Ph.D. from Texas A&M University (2008), his MA from Missouri State University (2002), and his BA from Southwest Baptist University (2000). David was a member of the SBU speech and debate team (1996-2000) where he won numerous awards in both individual events and debate. He served as an assistant coach at SBU (2000-2002) while earning his MA at Missouri State University. David looks forward to the challenge of coaching the Talking Broncos and plans to emphasize the numerous educational benefits of forensics while continuing to maintain Boise State’s traditional team-oriented approach to competition.
Besides serving as the Director of Forensics, David is a productive teacher and scholar of rhetorical theory and public address.
Although his scholarly interests cover many facets of rhetoric and public address, the bulk of his scholarship explores the use of religious rhetorical forms in contemporary presidential discourse from Jimmy Carter through George W. Bush and beyond. He often presents his research at the national conventions of the National Communication Association and the Rhetoric Society of America. His scholarship has appeared in Sizing up Rhetoric, the Encyclopedia of Political Communication, and the journal Rhetoric & Public Affairs.
David’s interest in rhetorical theory and political discourse is reflected in the courses he teaches. In the classroom, he endeavors to use engaging instructional methods to help students understand the importance of political rhetoric and the urgent need to be critical consumers of it. He wants his students to not only understand more about political rhetoric, but to acquire a passion for informed participation in public affairs.
In his free time (what there is of it) David enjoys spending time with his wife Jodee and their son Ethan. He also enjoys watching basketball (he is an ardent fan of the San Antonio Spurs), reading works of history, and coming up with new creations on his backyard barbeque grill.

itical Theory, Social Philosophy of Communication, Mass Culture & Cultural Studies, Metascience & Communication Research.

Biography:
Professor McLuskie is an internationally known philosopher of communication and critical communication theorist who has taught at universities in the United States, Europe, and Eurasia. He served as a Fulbright Professor twice: first at the University of Vienna, Austria (1997), then at Tbilisi State University & the Georgia Institute for Public Affairs, Republic of Georgia (2005). He was also Guest Professor on the Faculty of the Social Sciences at the University of Vienna (2002). His research and teaching explores alternatives to prevailing perspectives on communication, whose concepts and recommendations are analyzed for their anti-democratic, a-historical and anti-intellectual dimensions and orientations. He emphasizes authentically critical sources for the idea of communication and the conduct of inquiry, sources located among philosophies and theories of society where “the political” is understood as an inevitable dimension of “the social.”  Subjects of his seminars and lecture courses are critical theory, cultural studies, meta-theory, perspectives of inquiry, and philosophical pragmatism. He encourages students to cultivate independent and informed assessments of their information diets, including those supplied by the university, to uncover practices of domination wherever “communication,” “the social,” and “the new” become codes and practices that limit criticism in a society that demands compliance. Professor McLuskie has directed 20 graduate theses at Boise State, through which half earned acceptance into prestigious Ph.D. programs in Europe and the United States with full funding, in fields ranging from philosophy to international service to communication and media studies. His book chapters and journal articles appear in the Communication Yearbook, Journal of Communication, Journal of Communication Inquiry, Journalism Quarterly, Javnost/The Public, and Medien & Zeit. Current research for publication includes two invited articles: one on power and power relations for the forthcoming International Encyclopedia of Communication Theory (Sage, 2010), the other on regimes of power that problematize ethical and moral perspectives, for the Handbook of Global Communication and Media Ethics (Blackwell, 2009-10). A founding member of the Philosophy of Communication Division of the International Communication Association (ICA) and of the Journal of Communication Inquiry, he frequently writes and reviews manuscripts for conferences and publications sponsored by the European Institute for Culture and Communication (EURICOM), the European Journal of Philosophy, ICA, the International Association of Media and Communication Research (IAMCR), the National Communication Association, and the Association for Education in Journalism & Mass Communication. He is on the editorial boards of three European journals: Javnost/The Public; Empedocles, the European Journal for the Philosophy of Communication; and Medien & Zeit. Recent presentations of his work occurred in July 2008, at IAMCR (in Stockholm, Sweden) and EURICOM (in Tampere, Finland). Samples of his publications and other information can be reached from his Boise State home page at  http://www2.boisestate.edu/emcluskie/

Biography:
One of my graduate professors, Carl Bybee, used to tell his students that university professors are the privileged class in our culture.  It is, I believe, something which in our occasional discontent over such issues as workloads, salaries, or the  increasing corporatization of higher education, we should never forget. We are a privileged class.
And, like all beneficiaries of privilege, we should be judged by what we do with that  privilege -- whether we use that privilege solely to further our own self-interest and  well-being, as so many of privilege in our culture do, or whether we use our  position of privilege to serve as an advocate, in our instance through education, for  those not as privileged; for those whose voices are too often unheard in our culture,  for those who are rendered powerless in a society whose institutions too often serve  only the interests of the privileged.
There is considerable debate in our culture about what purposes, and whose interests,  higher education should serve.  In my view, the university should, above all other  pursuits, be about the building of a more just, a more equitable, and a more democratic  society.  There are increasingly few institutions in our society which take seriously  these values, much less accept them as their primary obligation.  Let us hope that this university remains one of those few.
To learn more about me, you can click on my vita.  The other links will direct you to information about my courses, as well as a range of media and political sites that I find interesting.

Research Interests/Activities:  Photojournalism, History and Aesthetics of Mass Media, Modernism and Modernity, Psychoanalysis, European Post-Structuralism, Suicide Prevention, Metacommunication, Philosophy of the Social Sciences

Professor Bio:
Beginning his career as a photojournalist and art writer,  Peter Wollheim received his M.A. from Simon Fraser University (1978) and Ph.D. in Communication from McGill University (1991).  Previous projects include published photoessays on childbirth, the treatment of geriatric patients in a psychiatric hospital, the aftermath of gold mining on the landscape in British Columbia, and the history of Idaho’s historic State Penitentiary.
Current academic research projects include the role of money in family communication (with special emphasis on disinheritance), the role of alcohol as a proximate factor in completed suicides, and adolescent suicide prevention.  Recent investigative reporting interests center around patient abuses in private nursing homes and psychiatric hospitals, exposure of U.S. combat troops to depleted uranium munitions, and interlocking directorships in the Treasure Valley.  Long-term ambitions include writing a mystery series set in Boise (tentatively titled “The Potatoe Skin Murders”) and explorations of lenseless digital photography.
Dr. Wollheim serves as the Co-chair of the Idaho Commission on Suicide Prevention.  He has presented papers and posters regarding suicide at several national and international conferences.   He is a founding board member of the Idaho Suicide Prevention Action Network, and established the nation’s first Certified Crisis Worker preparation program on the BSU campus.  His efforts have earned him a Jefferson Award for Public Service, a BSU Foundation Scholar Award for Service, and commendations from the Idaho State Planning Council on Mental Health and the Idaho Chapter of the National Association for Mental Illness. He has also won three First Place Investigative Reporting Awards from the Idaho Press Club.
Dr. Wollheim often prefers to spend his spare time with what others dismiss as “the lower forms of life.”  An avid organic gardener, he practices apiculture (bee-keeping) and vermiculture (worm raising), as well as culturing yeast for purposes of homebrewing wine and beer.  On the stream or lake, he studies insects and other forms of aquatic organisms appropriate to fly tying and fishing.

The centerpiece of Dr. Wollheim’s office is a rocking chair, especially provided for students.  It’s his small protest against the rising tide of depersonalization in higher education.  Feel free to come visit.
